Discover Sapphic Fantasy: Must-Read Book List

Because we deserve epic magic AND epic love stories.

Let me be honest with you: I have been absolutely feral about sapphic fantasy lately. There is something so specific and so satisfying about opening a book and knowing, really knowing, that the magic and the yearning and the slow-burn tension is all between women (or women-loving people). No waiting around to see if your ship is going to sink. No reading subtext into the void. Just two women, an impossible quest, and feelings that could level a kingdom.

So I put together my personal five-book list. These are the ones that made me gasp, cry, and immediately force them on every friend I have. Your TBR starts here.

1. Born of Flame and Fury by Hannah Danielle

My number one with zero competition. This book took me completely apart and put me back together differently. The worldbuilding is rich and immersive, with fire magic that feels genuinely dangerous and a political landscape that rewards your attention. But what really wrecked me was the central relationship. These two characters are at war with each other, with their worlds, and with themselves, and watching them choose each other anyway? I am not okay. Hannah Danielle writes romance like she is holding a lit match to your heart and you are thanking her for it.

2. The Curse of the Goddess by C.C. Gonzalez

Divine power, mortal hearts, and a curse that no one understands what is even going on. That is the setup, and C.C. Gonzalez absolutely delivers on it. What I love most here is how the mythology is woven in with such care. This does not feel like a fantasy world borrowing a veneer of gods and fate; it feels like a place where belief actually matters, where the divine is messy and personal and sometimes cruel. The sapphic relationship at the center is tender (and hot!) in a way that completely blindsided me. I was expecting epic. I got epic and intimate. Perfection.

3. Her Spell that Binds Me by Luna Oblonsky

The title alone should have told me I was in for something devastating, and yet I was still not prepared. Luna Oblonsky has a gift for writing magic that feels genuinely intimate, the kind of spellwork that is deeply personal and almost vulnerable. The binding in this story is literal and metaphorical, and watching the two leads untangle what was done to them versus what they actually feel for each other? That is the good stuff. The writing style is lush without being overwrought. I read it in a single sitting and I would do it again.

4. Woodborn by Heather Nix

If you want something that feels like stepping into an old-growth forest and never wanting to leave, this is it. Woodborn has this gorgeous, rooted quality to it. The world building here is unlike anything I have read; it is not showy or dramatic, it is ancient and patient and a little terrifying in the best way. Heather Nix takes her time with this story, and the slow unfurling of both the central mystery and the relationships that form are the rewards for every bit of your patience. By the end I felt like I had been handed something rare. Keep this one close.

5. Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson

Juno Dawson said “what if witches, but also everything you care about in your queer friendships” and honestly, thank you. Her Majesty’s Royal Coven is the most contemporary-feeling book on this list. It is witty and sharp and it deals with real tensions around gender and identity inside queer communities with genuine thoughtfulness. The found family aspect hits incredibly hard. Yes, there is sapphic rep. Yes, there is magic. But what really makes this book sing is the way it understands that queer community is its own kind of spell. A perfect place to start if you are new to sapphic fantasy, and a treat if you are already deep in the genre.

Fair warning: every book on this list is the start of a series. We know, we know. But hear us out. Two of them, Woodborn and Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, are fully complete so you can read them all the way through right now. The other three, Curse of the Goddess, Her Spell that Binds Me, and Born of Flame and Fury, each have two books out already, which is honestly plenty of sapphic fantasy to keep you fed for a good while. You are welcome.

The sapphic fantasy shelf is growing, and it deserves every inch of space it takes up. Which of these is going on your TBR first? Drop it in the comments and if you have got recs that belong on a list like this, I genuinely want to know.
