After the Bookblast my reading slump has seemed to pass. This is what I have read so far in Sapphic September.
Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero
This is a three star read in my case. It was cute, very quick moving at times and fun in parts. At the end of the day it is 100% a Scooby Doo fan fictions, so if that is your thing, check it out. The Sapphic component is rather unrequited, but decent still.
The Sweet Sting of Salt by Rose Sutherland
4 Star probably pushing 4.5 to be honest. I went into this blind, as I did not know the folklore story of The Selkies Wife. I love learning when I am reading for pleasure and the authors notes at the end were very helpful. This one broke my heart in points and gave me such joy in others. I have a feeling this will be one that I will say “I would like to read that for the first time again”.
The Next 167 Hours by Christa Hickcox
A comfort reread for me, the Author has a new book coming out at the end of the month so I am getting ready for that. MC Ember, has had possibly one of the roughest years of her life. Rather begrudgingly she listens to her sister and starts seeing a therapist. the 167 hours represents the hours between her appointments. My pull to this book is always bc Ember is quirky and awkward and I tend to see parts of myself in her. 5 Star Read for me 🙂
The Last Bookstore on Earth by Lily Braund-Arnold – The earth has been ravaged by storms that have destroyed humanity. Very few people have survived the first round and the second round is coming. Liz has taken sanctuary in her former employers bookstore, when she is joined by a stranger in the night. 5 Star read for me, I needed a little YA break it seemed.
The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Pertus – A story of queer awakening, found family, and an amazing love story. Audre is transplanted from Trinadad to Minneapolis where she is introduced to her Dads best friends daughter Mable. The connection is almost instant and absolutely beautiful. This book does deal with some very heavy subject, including cancer and homophobia as a warning. Apparently I needed 2 YA books this week. 4 Stars!
Sister, Maiden, Monster – Lucy A Snyder – I closed this book and thought what the F did I just read? But I loved reading it, I just have a really hard time putting it into words. It is post covid pandemic and a new pandemic that is now reeking havok on the world. One that turns some people who are infected into zombie like beings. Add in a layer of religious prophecy, and lovecraft like themes…. I totally give it 4 stars, and if there is a sequel I will totally read it. But my description will never do it justice.
